deutsch Das Grab von Galileo Galilei befindet sich in der Kirche Santa Croce in Florenz. Eine Außenansicht der Kirche ist weiter unten zwischen dem deutschen und dem englischen Text zu sehen. Die Erstellung dieses Grabmals wurde durch Giovanni Battista Clemente de' Nelli, dem in der Inschrift namentlich erwähnte Autor von [3], veranlasst. In [1, S. 112] sind die personellen Zusammenhänge und die Vorgänge, die zum Bau des Grabmals führten, beschrieben. In [3, S. 876ff] ist die Inschrift mit einigen Abweichungen wiedergegeben und auch das Grabmal - ohne Inschrift - abgebildet.

Die Inschrift ist in lateinischer Sprache verfasst und lässt sich wie folgt ins Deutsche übersetzen:

Galileo Galilei, Patrizier aus Florenz,
der Größte, der astronomische Geometrie und Philosophie wieder herstellte.
Keiner seines Zeitalters ist mit ihm zu vergleichen.
Hier möge er gut ruhen.
Kaum im 78. Lebensjahr im Jahr des Herrn 1642 gestorben.
Den Hütern der Heimat ewig zur Ehre,
den an der Spitze stehenden patrizischen Männern, deren heiliger Tempel
dem Denkmal vom Lehrer Vincentio Vivianios für die Asche und
zugleich für sie als Vermächtnis [dient].
Der Erbe Ioannis Baptist Clemens Nellius, Sohn des Senators Ioannis Baptist [Nellius]
Er beendete [sein Werk] mit Freude im Herzen.
Im Jahre des Herrn 1737

In [2] ist eine Art Ahnentafel für Giovanni Battista Clemente de' Nelli wiedergegeben. Diese war mit dem Indiz, dass das F. am Ende der drittletzten Zeile für "Filius" steht (vgl. [1, S. 877]), für die Übersetzung der betreffenden Passage des Texts sehr hilfreich.

Gemäß den Ausführungen zu Vincenzo Viviani (siehe auch hier) sind auch dessen sterbliche Überreste in diesem Grabmal beigesetzt, obwohl er in der Inschrift nur beiläufig genannt und in [1, S. 112] dies gar nicht erwähnt wird.

Die Fotos wurden im Mai 2009 von Dr. Thomas Krivachy aufgenommen. Die Übersetzung der Inschrift ins Deutsche hat wieder in bewährter Weise Anica Jahning durchgeführt. Das Foto am Ende der Seite zeigt noch ein Detail des Grabmals und wurde im Februar 2011 aufgenommen.

Die Kirche Santa Croce / The church Santa Croce

english The burial-place of Galileo Galilei is located in the church of Santa Croce in Florence. An outer view of this church is provided between the German and English text above. The construction of this monument was caused by Giovanni Battista Clemente de' Nelli the author of [3]. The personal relations and facts leading to the erection of this monument are noted in [1, p. 112]. [3, p. 876ff] shows the inscription with some deviations as well as a picture of the monument.

The text of the sepulchre is provided in Latin. It reads like:

Galileo Galilei, nobleman from Florence,
the greatest, who recovered astronomical astronomy and philosophy.
None of his era may be compared with him.
Here he may rest well.
He died in the year of our Lord 1642 in his 78th year of life.
For the protectors of the homeland everlasting glory,
for the leading patricians, whose holy temple [serves]
the monument of Vincentio Vivianio's teacher for the ashes
but also for them as legacy.
The heir Ioannis Baptist Clemens Nellius, son of the senator Ioannis Baptist [Nellius]
He completed [his work] with delight in his heart.
In the year of our Lord 1737

[2] contains a pedigree of Giovanni Battista Clemente de' Nelli. This was very helpful for the translation together with the hint that the F. at the end of the tenth line stands for "Filius" (cf. [3, p. 877]).

According to the comments on Vincenzo Viviani (cf. also here) also his mortal remains are buried in this sepulchre, although his name is only mentioned marginally.

The photographs were taken in May 2009 by Dr. Thomas Krivachy. The translation of the inscription from Latin to German was performed by Anica Jahning. The photograph at the end of this page shows sa detail of the burial place and was taken in February 2011.
