Cenotaph for Évariste Galois in Bourg-la-Reine (France)

Der Mathematiker Évariste Galois kam in jungen Jahren bei einem Duell ums Leben und wurde in einem Massengrab auf dem Friedhof Montparnasse beigesetzt, dessen genaue Lage nicht mehr bekannt ist. Dafür hat man ihm auf den Friedhof seiner Geburtsstadt Bourg-la-Reine (Département Hauts-de-Seine) ein einfaches Denkmal errichtet. Der Text weist lediglich Namen, Beruf, das Geburtsjahr 1811 wie auch das Sterbejahr 1832 aus. Am Sockel wird mit einer Inschrift auf einer Marmortafel sein Vater und Bürgermeister von Bourg-la-Reine N. G. Galois geehrt.

Das Foto wurde im Oktober 2002 von Jürgen Hahn aus Berlin aufgenommen. Den Zugang zum Friedhof erhält man von der Straße Rue de la Bièvre aus.

The mathematician Évariste Galois died with the age of 20 after a duel and was buried in a common grave on the cemetery Montparnasse, whose location is not longer known. Therefore a stele-like monument was erected on the cemetery of his birthplace Bourg-la-Reine (Département Hauts-de-Seine). The inscription only mentions his name, the profession, and the years of birth 1811 and death 1932. The base of the stele is equipped with a marble plaque honouring his father and mayor of Bourg-la-Reine N. G. Galois.
