Diese Seite fällt vielleicht etwas aus dem Rahmen, da es sich hier nicht um ein Denkmal handelt, das einen oder mehrere Mathematiker würdigt, sondern diese nur erwähnt werden. Der französische Mathematiker Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis wurde vom preußischen König Friedrich II bei der Reorganisation der Akademie für das Präsidentenamt gewonnen, das Ersterer dann auch 1746 antrat. Dies kann als Grund angesehen werden, dass der Name P. L. M. de Maupertuis' am 1851 enthüllten Reiterdenkmal Friedrichs II Erwähnung findet.

P. L. M. de Maupertuis hatte 1736 die französische Expedition nach Lappland zwecks einer Gradmessung geleitet. Zusammen mit den Ergebnissen einer zweiten Expedition nach Südamerika, bei der ebenfalls eine Gradmessung durchgeführt wurde, konnte die Abplattung der Erde an den Polen nachgewiesen werden.

Christian Wolff wurde 1711 als Mitglied der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften ernannt, musste aber 1723 dieses Amt aufgeben und auf Befehl des Königs Friedrich Wilhelm I. Preußen verlassen. Friedrich II. von Preußen berief Christian Wolff 1740 zurück nach Halle.

This page is in some kind out of the ordinary, because it describes not a monument with respect of a mathematician, but only one is mentioned as a detail. The French mathematician Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis was called for president by the Prussian king Friedrich II. when the academy was reorganized. P. L. M. de Maupertuis starts this duty in 1746. This can be regarded as the reason why P. L. M. de Maupertuis is mentioned on the monument which was unveiled in 1851.

P. L. M. de Maupertuis has been the leader of an expedition to Lapland for some special surveying in 1736. Due to the results together with those from a second expedition to South America it could be shown that the earth is flattened at the poles.

Christian Wolff was appointed as a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1711, but must resign this position and leave Prussia in 1723 by an order of the king Friedrich Wilhelm I. The king Friedrich II. recalled Christian Wolff back to Halle in 1740.
