Well with monument for Gerhardus Mercator in Duisburg (Germany)

Auf dem Burgplatz vor dem Rathaus trägt der Marktbrunnen eine Figur, die Gerhardus Mercator darstellt. Gerhard Mercator (eigentlich: Geert Kremer, aber besser unter dem lateinisierten Namen bekannt) ist durch die Herstellung von Globen hervorgetreten. Seine mathematische Leistung manifestiert sich durch die Entwicklung der heutzutage Mercator-Projektion genannten winkeltreuen Abbildung von der Kugel auf einen Zylinder (der die Kugel am "Äquator" berührt).

Am Brunnen ist eine Tafel (siehe unten) mit folgenden Informationen und dem Stadtwappen von Duisburg angebracht:

Unweit vom Denkmal am Johannes-Corputius-Platz ist das Kultur- und Stadthistorische Museum gelegen, in dem je ein von G. Mercator geschaffener Erd- wie auch Himmesglobus sowie auch Atlanten ausgestellt sind (Mercator-Schatzkammer).

In front of the main-hall on the square called Burgplatz there is a well with a monument of Gerhardus Mercator on its top. Gerhard Mercator (originally: Geert Kremer, but better known by his latinized name) was an outstanding manufacturer of globes. His outstanding achievement in mathematics was the development of a conformal mapping from the sphere onto a cylinder being tangent at the "equator".

Nearby at the Johannes-Corputius-Platz the Museum for history of culture and the city is located. It shows original globes of the Earth and the starry sky as well as atlasses created by G. Mercator. This exhibition area is called Mercator-Schatzkammer (Mercator treasury).
