Denkmal für Aristarch in Mitilinii (Griechenland) /
Monument for Aristarchos in Mitilinii (Greece)

Auf der Freifäche des Paläontologischen Museums in Mitilinii im Innern der Insel Samos befindet sich ein Denkmal, das dem samiotischen Mathematiker Aristarch gewidmet ist. Aristarch schreibt man zu, dass er bereits das kopernikanische Weltsystem mit der Sonne im Mittelpunkt vertrat. Er schloss dies aus seinen Versuchen zur Bestimmung des Abstandes von Erde zur Sonne und den sich daraus ergebenden Folgerungen. Der Text auf dem Sockel des Denkmals lautet ins Deutsche übersetzt:

Im Eingangsbereich des Museums selbst ist noch das rechts abgebildete Tableau mit einem Medaillon und einem in einer aus Marmor stylisierten Pergamentrolle eingravierten Text aufgestellt. Der Text wird dem Philosophen und Schriftteller Plutarch zugeschrieben und kann aus dem Griechischen wie folgt sinngemäß übertragen werden:

Das Medaillon enthält neben dem gleichen Text wie das Denkmal noch den Namen der Künstlers D. Christogiannis.

Abschließend sei noch darauf hingewiesen, dass der Staatliche Flughafen von Samos nach Aristarch benannt ist (sieh Foto ganz unten).

On the area in front of the Paleontological Museum in Mitilinii in the inner part of Samos island there is a monument devoted to the mathematician Aristarchos. It is accepted that Aristarchos already posed the sun being the center of the world system. He concluded this from his results for determination the sun's distance from the Earth. The text on the monument's base may be translated as follows:

In the museum near the entrance there is a tablet which commemorates also to Aristarchos (cf. the picture on the right). It contains a medal and a pergament role shaped marble block with an engraved text. This text is presented as citation of the philosopher and essayist Plutarch and reads like:

The medal contains the same text as the monument's base but also the artist's name D. Christogiannis.

Finally it should be mentioned that the State airport of Samos in named after Aristarchos (see the photograph below).
