Gedenktafel fuer Regiomontanus /
Commemorative plaque for Regiomontanus

Ungarnaufenthalts 1467 - 1471 in Esztergom verrichtete.
Anlässlich des 550. Jahrestags seines Geburtstags

english On the right of the entrance of the castle's museum the is a rather inconspicuous plaque commemorating to Johannes Müller (called Regiomontanus). Regiomontanus has been engaged by the king Mátyás I Corvinus to his court (as astronomer/as librarian?).

The text on the plaque reads like:

Johannes Müller Regiomontanus
1436 - 1476
German astronomer and mathematician
In memory to the work which was performed during
his stay in Esztergom in the years 1467 - 1471.
In occasion of his 550. anniversary of his birth

the City Council of Esztergom and the
Amateur Astronomers of Komárom County, 1986.

It is conjectured that Regiomontanus and the Archbishop János Vitez collaborated in astronomical work. The museum includes the room "Béla III" which contains some concerning hints. Unfortunately this room was closed due to renovation in the years 2005 and 2007 and it actually can't be expected when it can be visited again.

The photograph below shows the castle as well as the basilika of Esztergom. The photographs were taken in March 2007.
