Die Präsentation von Fotografien bekannter Mathematiker war bei der ursprünglichen Intention für die virtuelle Ausstellung "Zeugnisse zu Mathematikern" ausgeschlossen worden. Die Gründe hierfür waren,

• dass sich diese Fotos in der Regel in mathematischen Instituten befinden und so der Allgemeinheit nicht zugänglich sind,
• zu befürchten war, dass die Anzahl der Exponate den vorgesehenen Umfang der Ausstellung sprengen könnte, sofern man eine gewisse Vollständigkeit anstrebt.

Gerade der erstgenannte Grund rechtfertigt eine derartige Ausstellung. Er bedingt aber auch, dass die Beiträge von den Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern sowie Gästen der Institute geleistet werden. So sollen in dieser Sonderausstellung nur Fotografien einzelner Mathematiker präsentiert werden, die auch an den Institutionen - wo ihr Portrait zu finden ist - gewirkt haben.

Nachstehend sind alphabetisch sortiert die Mathematiker angegeben, zu denen Exponate in dieser Sonderausstellung zu finden sind. Gibt es zu einem Mathematiker mehrere Portraits, so erscheint der Name mehrfach, wobei diese Listeneinträge nach den Ortsnamen alphabetisch sortiert sind. Dies relativiert sich aber, da möglicherweise verschiedene Schreibweisen des Ortsnamens verwendet werden.

Presenting photographs of well-known mathematicians has been excluded when starting to design the virtual exhibition "Monuments on Mathematicians". The reasons were

• that those photographs are primarily shown at mathematical institutes and hence are not accessible by the public
• it could be expected that the number of the exhibits will be much larger than the expected amount for the exhibition.

But exactly the first argument gives raise for a presentation in the internet. But it also requires that the contributions need to be done by the collaborators of these institutes and their guests. This special exhibition is bound to present photographs of mathematicians who worked at those places where their portrait can be found.

The following index contains all the mathematicians, for which this special exhibition possesses photographs. If there are more than one portrait with respect of one mathematician, the name appears repeatedly. These entries are then ordered alphabetically with respect of the locality. But in different languages these names may vary.
