Im Jachthafen von Oostende liegt das ehemalige Segelschulschiff Mercator der Belgischen Handelsmarine heute als Museumsschiff. Es ist nach Gerhard Mercator benannt, der in Belgien geboren, aus Glaubensgründen aber nach Duisburg auswanderte.

Das Bleiglasfenster mit dem Porträt G. Mercators befindet sich in der früheren Kapitänskajüte, es wurde von der Rückseite fotografiert¹⁾. Um das Porträt ist neben Geburts- und Todesjahr - 1512 und 1594 - noch nachstehender Text angegeben:

Nowadays the former training vessel Mercator of the Belgian merchant navy is used as nautical museum in Oostende's marina. It is named after Gerhard Mercator who was born in Belgium but went to Duisburg for confessional reasons.

The lead glass window with the portrait of G. Mercator can be found in the captain's cabin. The photograph is taken from the back¹⁾. Apart the portrait the years of birth and death - 1512 and 1594 - and the following text are provided:

Please, have in mind that the related German word Krämer means 'grocer' while the Latin concept mercator stands for 'trader'.
