Auf der Rückseite der 1£-Banknote¹⁾ der Serie D ist ein Portrait von Sir Isaac Newton abgebildet. Isaac Newton war wohl in erster Linie Physiker und Astronom, hat aber durch die Entwicklung der Infinitesimalrechnung (etwa zeitgleich mit G. W. Leibniz) auch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Mathematik geleistet.

Neben Fernrohr und Glasprisma ist links vom Portrait die Skizze einer elliptischen Bahnkurve zu erkennen, welche auch die Kraftvektoren (im Punkt P) ausweist, die einen Körper in die elliptische Umlaufbahn zwingen, wenn im Punkt S ein massereicher Körper / die Sonne stünde (Zweikörperproblem). Es sollte nicht unerwähnt bleiben, dass das Gravitationsgesetz von I. Newton postuliert wurde.

The back of the 1£ banknote¹⁾ of series D shows a portrait of Isaac Newton. Isaac Newton was primarily a physicist and astronomer, but made also essential contributions to mathematics especially by developing the differential calculus (almost in the same period with G. W. Leibniz).

Left from the portrait as well as a telescope and a prism the graph of an elliptic curve is shown. It also contains the parallelogram of forces, which force a body to run in an elliptic orbit, as far in S there is a body with a big mass (e. g. the sun). It should be mentioned that the fundamentals of this behavior - the so called law of gravitation - has been found by I. Newton.
