Der Mathematiker, Astronom und Poet Omar Khayyam wurde in Neyshabur in Persien geboren, wo er auch verstarb. Neben seinem Grab, das als Denkmal ausgestaltet ist, wird er auch durch die oben wiedergegebene große Büste gewürdigt. Diese besitzt an ihrem Sockel noch eine Tafel, die den Namen, die Berufe und die Lebensdaten von Omar Khayyam ausweist.

Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang, dass die Lebensdaten in arabischer Schrift (439 - 517) bezüglich des islamischen Kalenders angegeben sind, während sie sich in lateinischer Schrift (1047 - 1123 A. D.) auf den christlichen Kalender beziehen. Es mag überraschen, dass die Differenzen des Geburts- und des Todesjahrs unterschiedlich sind. Doch ist festzuhalten, dass sich der islamische Kalender an den Mondphasen orientiert und somit 10 - 12 Tage kürzer ist als das Sonnenjahr, welches auf der Umlaufzeit der Erde um die Sonne basiert. Daher wandert das Neujahrsfest des islamischen Kalenders durch das Sonnenjahr.

The mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyam was born in Neyshabur in Iran, where he also died. Apart designing his grave in form of a monument he is also honoured by the huge bust shown above. The latter also possesses a base with a plaque showing the name, the professions, and the dates of life of Omar Khayyam.

It is interresting that the dates of his life in arabic letters (439 - 517) (may be Farsi) are given by the dates of the islamic calendar while they are given in latin for the Christian calendar (1047 - 1123 A. D.). It possibly might be surprising that the differences of the dates of death and birth are not equal in both systems. But, please, have in mind that the islamic calendar is based on the lunar phases and hence is about 10 up to 12 days shorter than a solar year, which is based on the motion of the earth arround the sun. Consequently, the beginning of the years of the islamic calendar moves arround within the solar year.
